Style is not water (it's Chanel 5)

Updated: Nov 22, 2024

Hey you

I'm back to talk about fashion. Fashion means so much to me and I can't explain in one word, so I call in a dear old friend of mine (I wish), who in 2011 said:

Fashion is the most powerful art there is. It's movement, design, and architecture all in one. It shows the world who we are and who we'd like to be.

It's not about superficiality or waste of time, it's a way of being. More then fashion, I would like to talk about style. About me not having one (at least), is pretty serious. Style tells about you before shaking hands and not having one is like show up for a job interview without your own CV.

Boho chic, country, indie, pin up, normcore or romantic, doesn't matter wich one, style is able to come out what we have inside and giving it up would be like sabotaging our qualities. If you're not able to imagine styles above, well, keep reeding guys, you really need it.

Let's start with Boho style,  which obviously stands for Bohemian, typical of lovers (or nostalgics) of the 70s. It rose in the 2000s also thanks to the model Kate Moss: off to oversize shirts, floral prints, midi skirts, fringes and eternal flared jeans.

This style tastes of indipendence, rebellion and hippie romanticism, it recall today's radical chic.

If I say Country, you say Billy Ray Cyrus. Main colour obviously brown and all its shades: from the cowboy hat, matching the belt and buckle, all combined with a checkered flannel shirt. From 17th century France, Country has been knocking (again) on the door for about three years with Texan boots in every color and every size. Whether they are suede or imitation leather, they look great over a skirt, skinnies or again, flared trousers. For those who have a basic knowledge of the 80s, they know well that indie was born starting from music but above all from lifestyle. Indie stands for independent and in the fashion world it is understood as free self-representation that enhances the individual. Just one rule: be yourself.

Now come the strange words: Pin up refers to a predominantly feminine style which takes its name from "Pin-up girl" - girls to hang. This stems from the practice of American soldiers hanging photos of movie stars on lockers and in military camps. The greatest representative of this stylistic current is obviously Grace Kelly, characterized by polka dots, sumptuous dresses, corsets with visible lingerie.

Here we are: this is the Normcore style, sadly very widespread: the key word is comfort. Neutral, almost anonymous colours, worn on sweatshirts and oversized trousers that give an idea of deliberate sloppiness. Says absolutely NO to tight and ironed clothes, also abolish any type of shoes other than sneakers.

WARNING: this style has a deliberate tendency to bloat the figure, so it does not fit all silhouettes.

As they say: last but not the least, Romantic style. Such as pin up style, it goes back to the 50s

Come nello stile Pin up ci rifacciamo agli anni 50 characterized by high waist, polka dots and lace. This time pastel colours are better: pink, salmon, cornflower and powder blue are the most popular.

To stand out from any other style, the romantic one is recognized thanks to the shawl that is worn on the shoulders like a princess.

Just look at Queen B on the right waiting for her prince: she's already a princess.

That's all for today, to find out more about men's style, wait for another article.

See you soon.
